Ingredients for henna tattoos

Henna tattoos and body art can be a fun and non-permanent way to decorate your skin. Unfortunately, not all the henna is created equally or as safe for application to the skin. Henna paste is made of henna powder, which is derived from the henna plant. According to Health Canada, the henna in its natural form is safe for application to the skin. However, many formulas prepackaged henna paste and even craft may have harmful ingredients, making your application unsafe. Knowing what ingredients are recommended and what is not essential before applying henna to your body.

And PPD black henna
In its natural form, henna stains the skin tones of brown and orange. However, some vendors sell what is called "black henna" or henna that has been altered with chemicals to darken the dye. Para-phenylenediamine, or PPD, is one of the chemicals that caused several adverse and allergic reactions when applied to the skin. The severity of these reactions led to the American Academy of Dermatology to publish a ban on black henna temporary tattoos containing PPD.

Natural catalysts: oils and acids
Addition of hot water, other natural ingredients are sometimes added to create henna paste to improve dye penetration. Most of these natural substances can be found in lotions and other skin care products. Sometimes tea leaves or nail the hot water, which is then mixed with the powder to create henna paste are added. The citric acid such as lemon juice and orange are also commonly added to the henna.
